June 26th, 2009

Canine arthritis is a condition in which there is inflammation in a joint. This inflammation can damage cartilage, fluid, or surrounding bones. Your dog can develop three different types of arthritis. They include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid, and septic. Keep reading to learn all about the different types of arthritis in canines.

Rheumatoid

The first type of canine arthritis is rheumatoid. This condition occurs when your dog’s immune system produces antibodies that attack protein in the body. This health problem, which causes severe inflammation, can become very painful. The inflammation can affect cartilage in addition to surrounding tissue. This form of canine arthritis can affect any of your dog’s joints. If it isn’t treated quickly, your dog will suffer extreme pain. Your dog will need to take cancer drugs and steroids to treat this condition.

Osteoarthritis

One of the most common types experienced is osteoarthritis. It causes damage to bone and cartilage. Dogs usually display little symptoms as this disease progresses slowly over time. However, this form of canine arthritis gets worse as your dog ages and starts to cause extreme discomfort and pain.

Your dog will need to take anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids to treat osteoarthritis. Surgery may be necessary if your dog experiences too much pain. Healthy diet, frequent exercise, and weight loss are other treatment methods for this condition.

Septic

One of the final forms is septic arthritis. This form of canine arthritis is caused by a fungal, viral, or bacterial infection that occurs in one of your dog’s joints. For example, your dog may develop this condition if he’s bitten by another animal. The organism travels through the bloodstream until it reaches a joint which it infects. Invading bacteria can be treated using antibiotics.
