how to stop your dog from barking while in a cage?

dog cage

My dog is really happy when we are at home and for the most part a disciplined smart dog. Just like everyone we have things to do that requires him staying in a cage while we are away from home; however his barking is out of control and irritates the neighbors. Is there ?

Disguise the cage. Make it look nice so he won’t be scared.

Cover the cage with a towel so he cannot see out

I’d bark too if I was put in a cage, wouldn’t you?

Have you filled the cage with things to occupy him while you are away? He is either barking out of boredom or because he is missing you too much, either way he needs distraction as a first step. You can try leaving an old jumper of yours in there too for comfort.

We have lots of toys and bones to keep the dog busy. We leave a radio or tv on for the dog. We practiced at our last house with our dogs one day. We pretended to leave, and when they started barking, we popped back in the house and said “settle down” and when they did we praised them. We did it again raising and lowering the garage door and popping back in the house when they started barking and telling them to “settle down” and praising them when they did. After a while it became “no big deal” that we were leaving because we kept coming back. When I leave the house, I tell my dogs “not this time” and they know to settle down.

Hey,

One thing you can do is leave the tv or radio on while you are not there. Alternatively, try covering the cage with a sheet – this may do the trick. Another thing you can do is make sure your dog has some of its toys or possessions in its cage to make it feel more comfortable. A sweater that has your smell on it or something like this can sometimes help.

For more information about this, I have included a website link below.

Hope this helps,

With a little training you can try to keep him freely at home. Maybe he feels like in prison in that cage…
