dog shoes
Marilyn asked:

Not only shoes… remote controls, hairbrushes, etc. Anything in sight. This is an adult dog we adopted from New Orleans after the flooding… any help would be appreciated.

send you dog to dog obedience school. it is very effective. you need to work with your dog too.

Lightly put hot sauce on items to keep the dog from chewing but, also give the dog something to chew on that you are comfortable with.

By now your dog has bonded with you. I use lots of chew toys because they need to chew. This cleans their teeth and satisfies the need to mouth things to identify objects. I tried everything from taking an unwanted object and replacing it with a stuffed chew toy to showing displeasure and removing the object. Finally, one day he ate one of my favorite tennis shoes.
I tied the shoe to his collar and scolded him by saying “MINE…MINE” then I ignored him. When he tried to make up I repeated the MINE. He then went to a corner and kept trying to make eye contact. I ignored him and periodically said “MINE” and shook my head. After awhile I took the shoe off his collar. Waited a while longer and gave him lots of love. When he touches anything that is mine I simply say “mine” and give him a toy.
The tennis shoe was about the end of the naughty boy stuff. I gave him the other shoe and put it in his box…he has never so much as looked at it. Play mine-mine and good luck to both of you.

Give it lots of appropriate toys to chew and and put away the stuff you don’t want him chewing on. My dog used to be the same. Obedience classes to help. They teach you the “leave it ” command which is a lifesaver! Also, what woked w/ my dog, keep a water gun or spray bottle, filled w/ plain water, at hand. When they are misbehaving just give them a spritz. My dog did not like it at all so she would stop in her tracks at the sight of the spray bottle.

Bitter Lime is amazing. I’d go to your local pet store and pick some up.

get something better and keep shoes picked up…they make a bone that is hollow and you can stuff it with dog food or peanut butter etc. It keep dogs busy for a long time. Obediance school is a waste of money. YOu can train the dog yourself. Pig ears are great too…It will prob grow out of this behavior. My golden did…..

some good answers..another thing that helps teach the dog is…every time you catch him with a shoe or other object in his mouth, take it, say no in a firm voice, replace it with one of his toys and then when he chews his toys say good boy. Every single time he plays with his own toys instead of something of yours praise him. eventually he’ll learn

b.w.

Untill he learns what is acceptable to chew and what isn’t try to keep things you value out of reach. Provide plenty of acceptable things to chew (never old shoes, they do not know the difference) The kongs that you put treats in are good. When the dog does pick up something he should not have tell him “no” firmly, remove the object and replace it with an acceptable object. When the dog chooses the right things on his own, praise him. Always, obedience training is a must. If you don’t know how, enroll in a class. When you are not home, crate him.

Use a remote controlled dog trainer.
